Project Description
The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school and early college experience for academically talented juniors and seniors from across the state. Located in Hartsville, the two-year program is ranked among the Top 20 best academic secondary schools in the nation. Completing the GSSM campus will allow the school to provide world-class educational opportunities to even more of South Carolina's most accomplished high school scholars. What Makes This Project Interesting
From a joist design standpoint, this project was very interesting. New Millennium Building Systems was able to design the 16’-0” deep joist as a single joist in three pieces, with one layer of bridging as opposed to two separate joists with two layers of bridging. This approach saved additional erection time, was a more straightforward erection, and gave the joists a very distinct look – which was appropriate for the Science and Mathematics center. What was the scope of this project? Construction of two new additions. One is a 43,000sf two story academic wing with science labs, computer labs and classrooms. The second addition is a 27,300sf gymnasium with a two story portion consisting of multi-purpose rooms, student activity areas, locker areas and storage. Materials include structural steel framing, concrete slabs, reinforced masonry, steel joists, pre-fabricated light gauge metal trusses and finishes.Project Details
